I had a white one but it’s gone somewhere…where it’s gone in my small kitchen?!?
Anyway, this is named “otoshi-buta” and it’s a very nice pun.
*Otoshibuta* is one of our traditional cooking tools, a lid made to be a little smaller than the pot diameter. it’s very popular cooking method in Japan - usually to simmer ingredients with little broth/flavored liquid. Otoshi=to drop futa=lid
And this *Otoshi-buta* is a word-play. Otoshi=to drop, buta=pig
SO, well, I have seen this photo above several times on tumblr already, but this is not quite right use of otoshibuta at least in Japan:p
Check what I see when I google the same thing in Japanese:)
and that pig’s nostril is designed so the liquid circulate over the ingredients under the lid, and so we can remove the lid with chopsticks without touching, rather than let off the steam:3
Don’t take it wrong though, this is not a complaint at all. I’m rather very happy to know this little pig is widely loved overseas:)
